Old Sherwood was built at the junction of the main traveled road running west from Webb City and the road running north from what is now called Belt Center. It was founded in 1847. In 1856, Judge McKee was appointed Indian Agent over five Indian Tribes and sometimes there were as many as a thousand Indians camped around Sherwood. In 1856 and at the beginning of the Civil War there were 200 people living there, several stores and a school house. In 1861, Sherwood was Jasper County's third largest town with 250 residents. Since Sherwood was sympathetic to the South, the town and surrounding farm houses and buildings were destroyed by the Union Troops. November 19, 1863.
