Early History of Scotland, Missouri

Scotland is located eight miles east of Joplin and was named after a Rev. Scott. The town was laid out in 1873 and comprised of sixty lots. Buildings in the town were a hotel, a mill, two stores, a post office and in the middle 1870's it had three smelters. The population at that time was around 500 people. Scotland's best days were during the mining area.
