Comments | Elliott "Roy" Foster, his brother (not sure which one), and his best friend were walking out of the FH Nesbitt mine, which they were preapring to blast when a rock fell from the ceiling of the mine, striking Roy on the head and killing him. My grandmother (Nellie) remembers her family clearing all of the furnitre out of her and her sisters' bedroom and moving Roy's coffin in there. She stood in the doorway, and all she could see was the tip of his nose and the big bandage on his head. Bertha was a seamstress and made all of the family's clothes, but Elliott's sister took all the children to the store and bought them new clothes for the funeral. It was the first time my grandmother ever had store bought clothes. According to my grandmother, the funeral was one of the biggest ever held in Joplin at the time. So many people showed up that they couldn't fit everybody in the church. If anyone comes across any reference to this in an old newspaper or something, I would love to have a copy. | |||
