Harry H. Smith, son of L. W. Smith, left last night for Columbia where he will
enter the agricultural college at the Missouri State University. He will
take the full course in agriculture and has made application to the
Jasper county horticulturist for them to bear part of his expenses
according to their recent proposition. There are two other candidates
and the matter has not yet been decided. Mr. Smith is a bright, capable
young man who lives six miles southeast of Carthage. He is a graduate of
the Carthage high school class of 1896.
J. J. Rambo, of Chetopa, Kansas, has purchased a half interest in the Carthage
Printing company on South Main street owned by Leach Brothers. Mr. Rambo
is already here, taking charge of his interest this morning. His family,
consisting of a wife and two children, will follow him as soon as Mrs.
Rambo can dispose of her millinery business at Chetopa. Mr. Rambo
formerly owned the Chetopa weekly Democrat and has been printing in
Kansas since 1863.
The fire department was called out at 5:30 o'clock yesterday by an alarm
of fire from the residence of M. H. McClure on McGregor street. The fire
caught from the furnace and burst out of an open grate. Mr. McClure
succeeded in subduing it before any great damage was done and the firemen
were not required to do any work.
Vivian Earle Hatch, the two year old son of F. B. Hatch of the Ecomony
clothing store, was run over by a horse and buggy on Maple street at noon
today. Fortunately the little fellow was only bruised and scared. The
young man who was driving in the buggy did not seem to be particularly at
fault as the boy was playing in the road, but he did not take the trouble
to stop and see what damage he had done.
Ex-Deputy Constable T. T. Hier was arraigned before Justice Tyree today and
took a change of venue. He will have his preliminary before Justice
Strother at Webb City Jan 11. His bond was fixed at $600, and he expects
to raise it in a few days.
Rev. C. V. Criss, formerly Presiding elder
here but now a pastor at Springfield, was in Carthage today on his way
home from Joplin, where he preached yesterday at a jubilee service to
celebrate the fact the the M. E. church there is free from debt.
George Stone, formerly in business here but who for a year past has been in
Ohio, was in the city today. He intends to go to farming in Barton
county and will move his famiy back from Ohio next spring.
