A Fight At A Dance
One of the Participants Lying at the Point of Death
At a dance given at the home of John Young near the edge of Purcell Saturday night a fight was indulged in between Young and a young man named Sydenstricker. The former is now lying at the point of death as a result. It seems that the two men had arranged a dance to be given at the Young home and everything was progressing lovely until midnight when Young became intoxicated. He entered the house with a heavy whip in his hand and everyone fell back before him, giving him the entire room. The drunken man then advanced to the door of his wife's bedroom where she lay on the bed with several small children. Here it is said he began to whip her, when young Sydenstricker interfered and tried to stop the drink crazed man from beating his wife. This angered Young, who hit Sydenstricker, who ran from the house followed by Young who hit him several times. The young fellow picked up a hoe which was lying on the ground and dealt the older man a heavy blow and crushing his skull. At this writing Young is still alive, but the wound is a most dangerous one, his brains oozing out, and it is thought that he cannot live through the day.

A man named Stanley was killed near Kansas City, Sunday night, by being struck by a Missouri Pacific passenger train. Another man named Hudson was with him at the time. Hudson said that both he and Stanley were from Oronogo and were going to Kansas City to look for work.

Killing a Wife-Beater Reported
Carthage, Mo., May 23.-From Purcell comes the report of the killing of John Young at that place. It is alleged that Young began to beat his wife, when his wife's nephew, Milton Sydenstricker, interfered, and that in the fight that followed Young was struck upon the head with a hoe and instantly killed.
(Milton was John Young's nephew, not the nephew of John's wife)
