Harry H. Smith, son of L. W. Smith, left last night for Columbia where he will enter the agricultural college at the Missouri State University. He will take the full course in agriculture and has made application to the Jasper county horticulturist for them to bear part of his expenses according to their recent proposition. There are two other candidates and the matter has not yet been decided. Mr. Smith is a bright, capable young man who lives six miles southeast of Carthage. He is a graduate of the Carthage high school class of 1896.

J. J. Rambo, of Chetopa, Kansas, has purchased a half interest in the Carthage Printing company on South Main street owned by Leach Brothers. Mr. Rambo is already here, taking charge of his interest this morning. His family, consisting of a wife and two children, will follow him as soon as Mrs. Rambo can dispose of her millinery business at Chetopa. Mr. Rambo formerly owned the Chetopa weekly Democrat and has been printing in Kansas since 1863.

The fire department was called out at 5:30 o'clock yesterday by an alarm of fire from the residence of M. H. McClure on McGregor street. The fire caught from the furnace and burst out of an open grate. Mr. McClure succeeded in subduing it before any great damage was done and the firemen were not required to do any work.

Vivian Earle Hatch, the two year old son of F. B. Hatch of the Ecomony clothing store, was run over by a horse and buggy on Maple street at noon today. Fortunately the little fellow was only bruised and scared. The young man who was driving in the buggy did not seem to be particularly at fault as the boy was playing in the road, but he did not take the trouble to stop and see what damage he had done.

Ex-Deputy Constable T. T. Hier was arraigned before Justice Tyree today and took a change of venue. He will have his preliminary before Justice Strother at Webb City Jan 11. His bond was fixed at $600, and he expects to raise it in a few days.

George Stone, formerly in business here but who for a year past has been in Ohio, was in the city today. He intends to go to farming in Barton county and will move his famiy back from Ohio next spring.
