S. B. Linn, sucessor to S. S. Wells in the queensware business at this place, starts to-day on a two weeks business trip to Brownsville, Penn.

Mr. and Mrs. H. Bailey and son, each of Augusta, Kansas, are visiting at Mr. Silas Bailey's, on Olive street. They are on their way to Eureka Springs

The Shields & Owens' shaft at the Carthage mines is progressing finely. The are some twently-eight feet deep with shines, favorable to good mineral. These you men deserve great credit for the perseverance they manifest, as they are doing their own work, with contidence of success

Frank Mitchell was brought before Esq. Higgins to- day charged with assaulting one Johnann Sublett, colored. He was sentenced to ten days in the county jail with $5 fine and expenses. Also appeared before the same, at the same time and place before mentioned, one Martha Sutton, a nine year old white girl, under charge of petit larceny, which case was dismissed

J. F. Harrison has just returned from a trip south and east, and reports no rain in Ozark and Douglas counties for five weeks. Corn is dried up and mostly in shock. In Oregon county, he met a man sixty years old, who had just seen a railroad train for the first time, and at Humansville, they are happy over the coming of the cars-citizens go out eight or ten miles to meet the approaching construction train, many of them never having before seen a locomotive.
Mr. Jesse Heston, one of the substantial farmers of Jasper county, was in the city today and "cashed up" another year for the Press, with the admonition to "whoop her up on the political questions you just sent me." We will do it Jesse, that is what we are here for.

From the Joplin Herald: Dr. Weibley, of Opolis, took about two ounces of Fowler's solution of arsenic yesterday morning through mistake. Prompt medical aid saved his life; The preliminary examination of Puckett before Judge Nicolls at Columbus was concluded on Thursday. Yesterday he was committed to jail to await his trial at the district court, commencing Sept. 7th, on the charge of murder in the first degree. An attempt is now being made to liberate him on a writ of habeas corpus, which it is to be hoped will not be granted.

Saturday Siftings: Miss Lollie Moore returned this morning from a visit to Calebyate Springs.

Other new shafts are being sunk at the Carthage mines and the boys are hopeful.

Mrs. Lawrence and Miss Marshall drove over to Joplin to-day to see the town.

We are waiting to hear the thunder after the Asylum lightning has struck-Sarcoxie.

Pears were never so plentiful in our market as now. They are retailing at $1.50 per bushel.

In the absence of Ed Thomas, who is now in Fort Smith, Miss Maud Slauson has charge of the office.
